NYLD 2015 Conference

On Wednesday last week all of the house captains and class councilors of HNI went to Palmerston North for the national young leaders day.

There were 7 speakers there William Pike, Cam Calkoen, Marcus Winter, Zane ( Can't remember his last name ) , Colson Verdonk, Phoenix Pule'anga and Jamie McDell.\
here is a bit about each speaker.

William Pike came and spoke to us about his trip up Mount Ruapheu. Him and his friend went up mount Ruapheu to climb to the summit which is 2797m. Before they could get to the summit they had to spend a night in a small room away from the summit. The room was very small and cold but that was all they had. So they UN packed their things and went to sleep. But William couldn't get to sleep because his friend snored. Then he could here a rumble so he looked out side and the volcano was erupting wind was flying into the room and rocks were flying in. Rocks came in and landed on top of his right leg. His friend then got up and tried to help move the rocks of Williams leg but they couldn't get all of the rocks so his friend had to run down the mountain and try to get help. He did but William wasn't sure they would get to him in time but in times like this he said to remember "Don't let your worries and thoughts get in your way."
In the end they did save him but they couldn't save his right leg so they had to amputate his leg so now he has a metal leg.
A quote from William Pike: "Need to think passion no limits."

The next speaker was Cam Calkoen. Cam has cerebral palsy and he was telling us about his life how when  he was young the doctors told him that speaking and walking would be his biggest challenges. But even though he knew that they were going to be a challenge he kept persisting with it. He joined a  gym now he is in the Paralympics and a speaker that has spoken in a lot of different places.

Cam Calkoen had lots of inspirational quotes here are some: "All you can ever be is the best you, you can be."    " Difference is a good thing" "Inspiration is in everyone of us everyday.

The third speaker was Marcus Winter. As a kid Marcus Winter was a slow writer but like Cam he used his weakness to help him. He is now the fastest sand artist in New Zealand. For his speech he painted a picture he started by painting mountains and he said "make your mountains " meaning set your goals. Then he just started to paint a waterfall off the mountains down into a lake when he did that he said "find your flow" as in try completing your goal find a way to make it easy then he painted rocks and grass ( that's just for the picture.) Next he drew two trees and he said "you need to grow your support."
Through out his speech he also said some quotes that I noted down my favorite quote (which would be my favorite of them all ) "You hold the paint brush so you decide what you paint."

Here is a link to watch his video of him doing sand art Click here

Next was Zane ( can't remember his last name)  I don't have much to say about this guy but you should find someone who went to the young leaders conference and ask them because they will have a lot to say about them. But one thing that I can remember is that  he said "to always be honest".

Colson Verdonk was the 5th speaker I don't remember much about his life story but I know that is a boy at Palmerston North Boys High school. And I also remember three things he said
      1. " You don't have to be exceptional to do exceptional things."

      2. "Success means inspiring, helping, caring."

      3. "Each and everyone of you aren't future leaders you are leaders now."

6th speaker was Phoenix Pule'anga he is a dancer in a dance group called the Krash dance crew. His and his brothers child life wasn't so good and but his brothers were part of a dance group. And Phoenix wanted to be part of it as well. Eventually his brother let him and they are now a very good dance group that has been to lots of competitions. And now he is going to be in a movie called "born to dance"
One more thing that I do remember is that he said "making the most of every opportunity you get."

And the finale speaker was Jamie McDell when she was a kid she didn't know what she wanted to do when she grew up when lots of her friends did. But everyday after school she would come home and write in her music book, she wrote about her day so it was like her diary but it was her music book.
Her parents heard her singing in her room every night. So they decided to sit her down and ask her if she wanted a carer in music and she said yes. So she got in touch with a New Zealand music company and they liked her songs and thought she could have a carer in music. So now you should all know Jamie McDell is now a famous singer song writer. She said "You don't have to know what you want to do yet, take your time & any opportunity that comes to you."

Now that was a bit about every speaker that was at the Palmerston North young leaders conference I would just like to say that it was a great opportunity and that I heard a lot of inspirational quotes that help me be a better leader.

Rotation,reflection,translation art

In maths we have been doing work to do with reflection , translation and rotation. So we decided to make art by using a maths skill. We drew a design on one of the squares using geometric shapes squares, triangles and rectangles. Then I translated it onto the squares next to it this is what it looked like when I had translated it onto one square. you will have to turn your head to the side to see it translated. I had also started to reflect it next so you can see the pencil markings where I started to reflect it.

Room 13 tremendous panel

As you should know hni has been awarded with the money to redo a part of our school with an outdoor class room environment. For this each class had to create a panel that shows flona and flora of New Zealand. So we all drew are own ideas down onto a piece of paper then the teacher picked a few of the ideas and combined them together. Then these two ideas got chosen.

Once they had been put together our teacher drew it on our corrugated iron then some of the students in my class ( me included ) started to paint it. It only took about 1 week to complete with every stroke carefully done.  This is what the panel looked like once it was done.

Matahiwi Marae

On Monday we went to the Matahiwi Marae for part of the learning towards Kotahitanga week
(which was last week.)
We had  already had a brief learning about the protocol which happens when we get to the Marae so that we knew what to do.

All of the year eights from HNI went there on four buses.
Once we had arrived we gathered together facing the marae and then sang our school song.
After we  finished singing we moved around so that girls were at the front and the boys were at the back. We then followed behind a lady walking slowly to the marea atea where we then sat down. The girls sat at the back and the boys sat at the front.  When it is started there was a speech and then Clive school  sang two songs then it was over to us for us to then sing a song.

Once the powhiri had finished they lead us into wharekai where there they gave us water and biscuits and then we separated into three groups. One group stayed in the wharekai and Whaea Edwards then spoke to that group about the history of her family in the marae and explained what the painting and art work on the wall meant.

The next group went to the wharenui where Matua Unahi talked to us about Kahungunu and his relations about the ceiling panels and that they represent the local rivers - Ngaruroro
                                                                                                                    - Tutaekuri
                                                                                                                    - Tukituki
He also talked about the tukutuku panels, explaining what they mean
One symbolized the stairway to heaven or the stairway to knowledge because it had patterns on it that looked like lots of stairs that lead upwards.

The last group was with Matua Mulligan who talked about  Maui and his ancestors, about the carvings on the wharehui. He also talked more about the protocol that happens, how there is the karanga ( the calling on) where the girls walk on first then the boys. How there was then the powhiri where there were speeches and songs from both the hosts and the visitors.

In the end I learnt and saw some things I hadn't seen before.
This is a picture of a whale jaw inside the wharenui.

what makes a a good friend

What makes a good friend
Everyone needs someone they can count on to encourage them and to make them happy when they are sad. Those qualities are what you look for in a good friend.

It is immensely important that you are encouraging and supportive. You need to tell your friends to keep going and not to give up. Friends have to back you up and support  you in what you do, but they have to stop you if you are doing something bad or wrong ,not to just let you carry on. Also they can never laugh at you, only with you.

If you are upset then they would have to come and put a smile on our face and make you laugh. Your friends shouldn't just sit by and watch you be unhappy they need to do something because that is what friends are for.

A good friend should always be helpful, to be there to help you when you are stuck, if it is just from borrowing their pencil or giving you help with some work.
Or they tell you if there is something in your teeth or on your shirt because they are being helpful and telling you things that you didn't notice.

You also need to know that you can trust each other, to be able to keep each others
secrets. If you have trust in each other then it is a good friendship.
To know that you can trust each other means that you can lend your friend something and you can trust that they will return it to you and will not lose or break it.

Now you understand what makes a good friend you understand that you need to be encouraging, helpful and that you can trust each other to be supportive and kind.  These are the qualities of good friend.

Treemendous

Our school has been selected to have a tremendous makeover somewhere at our school. So now we have the money and our idea but we needed people to plant and sculpt the design. To do that there has been around 4 working bees on Saturdays where you can come in to school and help plant some trees, build some seats , dig some holes. Once those working bees have been, it was time for the big planting day. To get ready for that everyone who was at school on Friday got to plant a tree. There were over 400 trees so having everyone in the school planting one is a good start.
Here is a pic collage of some of room 13 planting trees,
