bug man

Today Ruud Kleinpaste or you may know him as bug man visited us at school today. He came to our assembly to talk about bugs and how they affect everything.  He talked about some of the different bugs, and  how all of them have there place in the ecosystem, also how they help us humans and other animals to survive.  Here are some facts that he told us.

1.Scientist have only discovered 1000 insects but they have a theory that there is around 12000 to 30000 bugs.

2. Bugs our useful for a lot.of things, for supplying food for humans ,they are food, dung eating insects like ants and more reasons.

3.  people find eating bugs really gross some humans. but we pay heaps for sea invederbats like our sea slugs and snails. like Paua, pipi, oyster ,mussels and more was  food.

Different insects and animals and there different uses:

4 .One of the insects that supply something our bees. They supply 1/3 of our food they  pollinate our vegetables and fruits and the grass so when animals like sheep cows eat the grass they have part of the pollen so without bees we would eventually run out of food

5. Monkeys eat leaves and bugs so before they eat the leaf they turn over the leaf  to look for bugs.

6 .Kiwis are 80 percent insect eaters they eat a lot of bugs they are like vacuum cleaners they will eat most things.

7. When you see a blue butterfly up in the trees and you want it to come down you have to find a shade of blue like there wings and put it on the ground then the butterflies will come down to look at it.

8. Orchid bees take the pollen from orchids like other bees take pollen from flowers.

9. Orchid bees are really quick hard to see.

10. If you want to see a Orchid bee well you should go to their hive to see them all.

11. If two Orchid bees met they talk to each other ( in bee language) to tell one another where they got their pollen from so that the other bee can go there and swoop there pollen for the Orchid pollen.

12. Sloths eat one big leaf a day which does not give them enough energy so that is why they are so slow. They go to the toilet once a week on a Friday so they have to climb all the way down the tree stalk to got to the toilet.

13.moss grows on the back of sloths

14. moths live ob the back of sloths, and when the sloths climb down the tree the moths lay eggs in the poo.

15. Humming bird can be very small around the same size as a pray mantis.

16. Poisonous frog eat poisonous ants and put some of that poison on them as a second protection.

17. Without dug disposal insects like ants it would take 3 years for us to be  living in 7 feet of poo.

Here are some pictures that he showed us and of him.
